Concerned about Vitamin D overdose

by Sherry (Minnesota)
My doctor recently called with my Vitamin D test results and is prescribing 50,000 units one time a week... my test number was 28 and she explained it should be 40...should I be concerned about taking 50,000 units one time a week?
I haven't filled my prescription yet...

How do I get rid of Vitamin D overdose?

My doctor said that my vitamin D level was low so he said to take 50,000 IU's of vitamin D weekly except that I misunderstood and took 50,000 IU's daily for 8 weeks. When my doctor found out, he ordered a Vitamin D toxcity test and my level is over 140 is all they would tell me but said that it was very high and to come back in 6 weeks for blood work.
I have A-Fib and I was reading the side effects of Vitamin D overdose and noticed that it can affect the heart?
I have been having very frequent urination and bone and joint pain and weakness.
Is there any way to get the Vitamin D out of my body?
My doctor just said to not take any more Vitamin D and calcium and to come back in 6 weeks for blood work.
Thank you for your help. Donna Smith

Vitamin D overdose

by Barb (edgerton wi. usa)
I have had a metallic taste and itching for over a week, plus vomiting 1 week ago. The only thing that is different in my diet is a vitamin d supplement. I took this vitamin daily for a couple of months before I noticed anything I quit taking 1 week ago. ( 1000-to 2000 iu per day).
Plus I drink a lot of milk. 1 week later, I am still itching and food and water tastes "off" plus I smell unpleasant odors that don't exist. How long before I can expect the vitamin D to get out of my system?
I have had an allergic reaction to a bee sting in the past and the itching feels the same way.

Are These Symptoms of Vitamin D Overdose?

by Gloria Brannon (Orlando, Florida)
My bones were not absorbing calcium. My doctor prescribed 50000 iu a week plus the vitamin d in calcium supplements 500 IU's daily. I have been getting head aches and today I have been urinating more than usual plus I had a nose bleed (this has never happened before) my tongue has been feeling a bit unusual kind of like I burned it.
My blood work showed 35 on my calcium reading. Is all of this overdosing on vitamin D? If so my main question Is the vitamin D going to leave my system eventually?
What can I do to counteract the level of D? I am calling the doctor tomorrow in the mean time I will appreciate any info.

Vitamin D Overdose Symptoms

by Patsy Dawson (Auburn, AL)
My pharmacist just filled a prescription for vitamin D, giving me 50,000 units of Vitamin D per day.
My vitamin D level is 94 ng/ml.
Is this too high?
I have several vitamin D overdose symptoms.

Vitamine D overdose

by jeanne (germany)
I have been taken 880,000 IU vitamine D3 in 5 weeks (I misunderstood the doctor). My level went from 5.9 ng to 42ng. Yet, while taking the vitamine D, I felt strongly my bloodstream through my legs and feet. My feet contracted and my calves tingled.
I got my period which relaxed the feet and the tingling in the calves went away.
Now, 8 months later, my both feet are very painful (plantar fascia stiff) and they tingle.
I went to the hospital. Bones, calcium, phosphore are fine. EMG was fine too. I will still have a skin biopsy to check on Small fibers neuropathy.
My feeling is that this pain comes from this very high dose of vitamin D taken in a short time.
Does it sound possible to you ?
Thank you for your answer.

My endocronoligist has prescribed 50,000 units, yes i said 50,000 units of vitamin D to be taken every other day, once a day, for thirty days thats 15 gel caps. Then one every other week for two months @ the same dosage. Do I have any need to worried or to be concerned with that prescription?

Hi Brad,
It would be more helpful to me to know what your Vitamin D Level is, but I suspect that it is VERY VERY low!!
If that is the case, then your doctor is actually just treating you really aggressively. While it's aggressive, it's certainly not toxic- although it would be if you continued for long periods of time.
But you are getting, in total, 1 1/2 million IU's of vitamin d. This dosage has been given to a group of adult males in one study with no problems.
And in East Germany, as you'll read on the Vitamin D Overdose page, for several decades newborn infants got a dose of 600,000 IU's every 3 to 4 months until they were 18 months old.
So, vitamin d is EXTREMELY safe- and if your vitamin d levels are super low, then that's a great aggressive dose. Your doctor seems to just be looking out for you- there aren't many doctors willing to be that aggressive with vitamin d!! You're lucky.
And I'm assuming that since you have to take so many pills, that you doctor did NOT write for Prescription Vitamin D?
Am I right?
If not, then your doc is really great since he's giving you over the counter supplements like these Vitamin D3 Supplements that I offer here on my site.
So, I'd be interested in what your vitamin d level is if you know.

D3 Overdose at fairly low level

by Richard (Madison, CT, USA)
My Wife and I have been taking a One-A-Day vitamin and an additional Vitamin D3 supplement.
I have been taking 1000 IU vD3 because my Mens One-A-Day only has 400IU.
My Wife has been taking 400 IU vD3 because her Women's One-A-Day has 800IU of D3.... We have both overdosed after a couple of months. I had the dry mouth and my Wife had the upper stomach pain/back pain symptom.
We are now trying to figure out a correct amount to take after being poisoned. I have seen all the white spots on my fingernails disappear so I know it works I just don't want to overdose. With all the information about how much to take daily this seems like a low dose we took. I am thinking that maybe I should take on pill every 2 or 3 days instead of once a day.
Please help.

Are These Vitamin D Side Effects or Overdose Symptoms

by Renne
I am taking 50,000 IUs of Vitamin D once a week. I just started taking it 2 days ago and have been extremely fatigued and sleepy, headache, pressure on the head- not normal for me. I also have had some bone, muscle and joint pain, which I've never had before.
Some place online say this is a symptoms of an overdose. Other websites say Vitamin D increases calcium in the blood and the symptoms I'm having could be related to too much calcium absorption due to the increased Vitamin D. Should I be concerned?
Will these symptoms gradually go away?
Thank you

Is 50 000 IU's a Day of Vitamin D Going to Make Me Overdose?

by Nichole (Coshocton, OH)
I have been diagnosed with an extreme vitamin D deficiency after having blood work done and my doctor prescribed me 50,000 IU of vitamin D a DAY! The pharmacist where I get my prescriptions filled says he's never heard of anyone taking this high of an amount daily.
I have also heard that doctors usually prescribe a calcium supplement while on high dosages of vitamin D, which he didn't prescribe. I'm very worried about Vitamin D toxicity with these high amounts..
Could someone please help me and let me know if this high amount should cause concern?
(Note from VitaminDWiki – very dangerous to have that much vitamin D without co-factors)
Thank you! Nichole

Is It Possible that We are Overdosing on Vitamin D?

I was told by my nurse to give my children (12, 17 AND 19 ) 1,000 IUs daily and for me and my husband to take 4,000 Ius daily. This because of the flu season and she said it would help us to not catch it. I have been doing this for about a month now and my husband has been getting bad head aches for the past two weeks and feeling not like himself. I have also been getting bad headaches and last night had a hard time breathing ( no cold ) and my heart was racing then slowed and then raced again.
This went on for almost 3 hours. My kids are all sick now with chest colds but no head aches. My husband and I both feel very cloudy headed and both experienced the heart thing. We are out side a lot, it's winter time here, but we both drink milk and eat cereal. I am concerned that maybe we are getting to much Vitamin D. Reading the columns it seems almost impossible from the amounts we are taking that we could be doing this but I just am curious. I will not be taking anymore for a while that I am sure of. None of us have any underlying health issues, just trying to stop from getting the flu.
Thanks for your time.

Vitamin D Overdose and Peripheral Neuropathy

by Kelly (SW Washington)
I started taking VitD liquid in May. It is now August and my peripheral neuropathy is extremely debilitating. I just got my blood test result back 119 ng/ml and I'm told to stop my supplements as I have a extremely high level of vitamin D in my blood.
My calcium level is also high 9.4 mg/dl. If I just stop the vit d supplements how soon will my symptoms begin to reverse. My symptoms are the peripheral neuropathy, constipation, lack of energy, loss of appetite, feel nauseous, and I can't think right.
Thank you.
