See the IOM mistake of claiming that 20 ng of vitamin D is enough

Tuesday May 29, 2012

In Nov 2010 the Institute of Medicine voted that 20 nanograms of vitamin D was enough for BONE health

With the following graph you can see that to protect against bone failure that about 72 nmols is needed

NOT the 50 nmols that the IOM voted for.

IoM error 8% not just 1% see http://is.gd/iomerror8
hashed lines and red were added by VitaminDWiki

CLICK HERE for details from Nature Magazine - July 2011

By the way - the IOM apparently did not look at any data after mid-2008,

so they missed out on an avalanche of new information: more than the bone benefits from Vitamin D

Vitamin D Recommendations from around the world: both IU and nanograms, which has the following

Vitamin D helps pets too

Tuesday May 29, 2012

People are finding the Vitamin D really helps their pets

Especially those pets at high risk of being vitamin D deficient - similar to list of humans at high risk

  • Seniors
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Do not eat organ meats or lots of fish
  • Overweight

Vitamin D for Pets items added in April and May 2012

Overview Veterinary and vitamin D

has details on vitamin D needs for animals and pets such as Reptiles, Turtles, birds, etc.

Note:

  1. Vets and the US govt consider that Vitamin D2 should not be given to any primate (we are a primate, right?)
  2. Vets give 3X as much vitamin D per pound than the US govt says is needed for animials (or humans)
But, vets are paid to keep their customers healthy, thus they ignore recommendations which might decrease their income
    Doctors on the other hand . . . .

Vitamin D IS a rat poison Nov 2010 in VERY HIGH doses

Lethal dose which will kill half of the rats (LD-50) = 17 mg/kg of rat = 680,000 IU per kg
Thus for a 100 kg rat (weight of an human adult) the LD-50 would be 68,000,000 IU = lethal

Proof that Vitamin D works

Monday May 28, 2012

Vitamin D was added and the results were documented

Many were random controlled clinical trials in which not even the doctor knows who gets the vitamin D (or how much)

In two cases the group was large enough (an entire country) that they just documented the without/with = before/after.

Example: Turkey found a 60X decrease in rickets after providing FREE 400 IU of vitamin D for all infants

The following table is a snapshot of the documentation as of June 3, 2012

Health Problem Reduction   Notes
Hypertension 149 => 142 RCT, mmHg, 2400 IU
Cardiovascular 32% Death after HF. 1000 IU
Diabetes T1 85% 12000 kids, 2000 IU
Diabetes T262% RCT, CRP reduction, 4000 IU
Back Pain95% 5000/10000 IU
Influenza 90% RCT, 2000 IU
Falls 19%RCT, 1000 IU
Pregnancy risks 50% RCT, 4000 IU
Rickets 98%Turkey, 400 IU
Multiple Sclerosis on-going RCT EVIDIMS 10000 IU
Raynaud's pain40% RCT, visual scale, 20000 IU avg
Menstrual Pain76%RCT, visual scale, 7000 IU avg
C-section, unplanned50% RCT underpowered 4000 IU

There are over 800 Clinical Trials with Vitamin D Intervention as of May 2012

Anticipate that this table will be updated many times in 2012 and 2013 as these trials are finished and published.

Vitamin D before, during, and after pregnancy

Tuesday May 1, 2012

The more vitamin D mom takes, the more benefits for her and the future child.

  • The benefits to mom start about 2,000 IU daily average (2000 IU costs less than $15 per year)
  • Substantial benefits proven for 4,000 IU taken during pregnancy (fewer complications, lower cost)
  • Best benefits at 6,000 IU - this much is also needed if breast feeding without supplementing the infant
  • Taking > 2,000 IU raises the cost, primarily due to cost of Co-factors

Vitamin D during pregnancy

IU Cumulative Benefit (by VitaminDWiki.com) Blood level Co-factorsCalcium $*/year
400 Less Rickets
3X less adolescent Schizophrenia
Fewer child seizures
20-30 ng/ml Not needed No effect $3
2000 2X More likely to get pregnant naturally/IVF
2X Fewer dental problems with pregnancy
8X less diabetes
4X fewer C-sections (>37 ng)
4X less preeclampsia (40 ng vs 10 ng)
5X less child asthma
2X fewer language problems age 5
42 ng/ml Desirable < 750 mg $15
4000 2X fewer pregnancy complications
2X fewer pre-term births
49 ng/ml Must have
co-factors
< 750 mg $75
6000 Probable: larger benefits for above items
Perhaps prevent 2nd autistic child
   clinical trials underway
Just enough D for breastfed infant
Must have
co-factors
< 750 mg $85

$* assumes

  • You buy fairly low cost vitamin D and co-factors (more expensive if liquid and/or vegan)
  • Using a low cost size of vitamin D - such as 5,000 IU, as often as needed. (50,000 IU costs even less)
Example: 5000 IU every other day if you only want an average of 2500 IU
  • Test vitamin D levels of those moms who are at high risk for being vitamin D deficient
$30 for a blood test about 6 weeks after starting vitamin D to check that mom is getting enough

Why are doctors reluctant to accept vitamin D

Monday April 23, 2012

We had been speculating why the medical profession has been so slow to accept vitamin D.
Probable reasons appear to include:

  1. Myth: Excess vitamin D will turn the human body into marble

  2. Reversal of position for many previous supplements.

  3. Risk being sued if exceed guidelines

  4. Experts do not agree

  5. Doctors were rarely been trained in nutrition

  6. Emphasis on treatment, not prevention

  7. Doctors often can only prescribe D2 anyway

  8. Seems like too much of a “wonder drug”

  9. Fear possible loss of income

"It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary is dependent upon his not understanding it”  Upton Sinclair
